  1. The article by Dr. Friedman on empathy is outstanding. It is a marvel of insight into the essential role of empathy that all truly good physicians and other health care professionals should bring into the clinical office and by the bedside of hospitalized patients, as well, I might add. His analysis of how it is often the case that medical education itself tends to diminish the potential for empathy that students bring with them is right on target. The increasing trend, however, toward more humanistic approaches to medicine is a welcome one, fostered by such exceptional teachers and writers as Dr. Friedman. Hugh Rosen, D.S.W.
