Boomer Generation Radio 11/17/2015: Kendal at Oberlin and Rabbi Cary Kozberg on Life Transitions

In the 11/17/2015 episode of Boomer Generation Radio, Rabbi Address welcomes Susan Campbell, Community Nutritionist; Lisa Wilkin, Dietary Supervisor; and Jeni Hoover, Director of Kendal at Oberlin’s Early Learning Center. In the second half of the program, Rabbi Cary Kozberg discusses the role of the chaplain in senior living, and also his own journey reinventing his career after 25 years as a community chaplain. Rabbi Kozberg now is owner of the business Side by Side, which provides life transition coaching.

Kendal at Oberlin, a continuing care retirement community in Oberlin, Ohio, has won national recognition for its intergenerational initiatives. Kendal at Oberlin’s Early Learning Center offers daily opportunities for intergenerational participation. A group of children and residents might be found cooking or gardening together. One resident reads to the children weekly and offers a lesson in sign language. Intergenerational Music and Art provides interaction with nursing home residents, and always concludes with the children serenading with much loved songs. Resident volunteers who love the water offer playtime in the Kendal pool. These, along with spontaneous activities, add much to the quality of life for both older adults and children.

Side by Side offers support for families and caregivers of older adults who themselves are coping with “caregiver stress.”

Combining experience and empathy, Side by Side can be an important resource to help you deal with the emotional and spiritual challenges that often accompany an older loved one’s increasing frailty.

Boomer Generation Radio is sponsored in part by Kendal Corporation, a Quaker-based provider of continuing care retirement communities in the Northeast and Midwest, airs on WWDB-AM 860 every Tuesday at 10 a.m., and features news and conversation aimed at Baby Boomers and the issues facing them as members of what Rabbi Address calls “the club sandwich generation.” You can hear the show live on AM 860, or streamed live from the WWDB website.
