Congregation Ner Tamid in Henderson, Nevada, has created a Friendly Visitor program working with and based on the Dorot model in New York City.
This program is designed to tackle “social isolation and creates inter-generational bonds of friendship that are incredibly meaningful,” says Rabbi Sandy Axelrod.
The founding cohort of ten Friendly Visitor volunteers were recruited, trained and matched with ten congregants who expressed interest. Two training sessions were held as volunteers confirmed their 6-12 month commitment to the program. A second cohort has also been trained.
