I awoke to the morning news
As outrageous grief and fear grips an iconic city, any city, the world.
I see images reminiscent to days of old
That I am too young to know
Yet feel with riveting horror, as though I was there.
How did the modern world get here?
Our humankind lives in differences.
But enough to make them slaughter and not embrace our similarities?
I thought those days were over.
How wrong, how sad, how naive to think that atrocity is in the past.
Why can’t you leave us alone?
You live your beliefs and we’ll live our beliefs.
We aren’t intruding upon or trying to change you.
Can’t we all live as neighbors, in peace?
I don’t know how to explain to my grandchildren
How killing innocent people with different beliefs makes for a better world.
Do I carefully tell them that life seems to replicate the story over and over and over?
That just the dates, the names and weapons change.
Is there anything new under the sun?
PLEASE! LIVE AND LET LIVE!
