I looked into the eyes of a 1-year old baby
And wondered how many twists, turns and maybes
During her life would be her journey while taking a toll
And realized I saw an old soul.
I then pictured her happy days of bliss
While hoping those times she’ll never miss.
Her family is all smiles with joy as they relish in the find
Of a new life and the presence of her unique mind.
Her spirit was apparent as she looked deep into our eyes
I wondered if she could detect our lies.
Is this the power of an old soul and exactly what does that mean?
Will she be one step closer to all that is keen?
The world is so vulnerable and scary
What burdens do her generation have to carry?
Innocence is such a lovely treasure
But how long can it be measured?
When will this precious child learn that peace
Is on lease?
When will this precious child
Know that the world’s climate isn’t so mild?
When will this precious child understand
That fair politics are not on demand?
When will this precious child feel
That love isn’t always even keel?
What burdens do her generation have to carry?
So their lives do not tarry.
Are our expectations wanting them to restore
The world that was so much more?
Is this too much to ask
As the world removes its 21st Century mask?
The easier times are in our rear-view mirror
I pray for days ahead that are not with terror.
What burdens do her generation have to carry?
I’m hoping for a peaceful resolve that will be sweeter on the lovely day
this precious child will marry.
